Chief of Police Zack Tyler is baffled by a recent crime wave, crimes with no logic or reason, only connected by mysterious sheets of printed paper left at the scenes. Those sheets each have very faint letters and numbers printed across the entire page.
Bringing in a Criminology grad student who happens to be highly skilled with code-breaking might make the difference, especially since she also happens to be his daughter, Tessa. But will Tessa’s analysis of the sheets of printed paper uncover something more sinister than anyone, even Detective Miller heading up the investigation ever suspected?
Sometimes the madness is bold; other times the true chaos is hidden within the FINE Print.
On a cool spring night in the darkened basement hallways of a police station, Chief of Police Zack Tyler has brought in a brainy grad student getting her degree in Criminology to look over some evidence. But while the crimes themselves were random and illogical, will the true chaos be unveiled hidden within the FINE Print?
Tessa Tyler is a brilliant student of Criminology and particularly skilled at spotting and solving coded messages or patterns. She also happens to be the daughter of the Chief of Police, which grants her a little privilege when it comes to looking over mysterious printed sheets of paper found at six very different crime scenes in recent weeks.
It’s the only link to the possibility that one suspect or one group is behind all six crimes. And the sheets of paper left behind are as mysterious as the motives behind those crimes, break-ins without robberies, witnessed assaults where victims claim no memory of the attacks. Each sheet at first appeared blank, just a strangely printed logo in the corner, the image of a mongrel dog with an S wrapped around it.
Upon closer inspection though, the police investigation led by Detective Miller has uncovered that very faintly on every sheet are printed completely random letters and numbers. And it is those letters and numbers that Tessa believes will shed light on the perpetrators… a pattern in everything, possibly coded messages meant to challenge police in solving the crimes.
But as brilliant as Tessa may be in seeing codes and figuring out such puzzles, as she works alone with only Detective Miller nearby to assist in the isolation of the police basement, the real danger of these crimes may ultimately be revealed within the fine print she discovers on each printed page.
Magnifying the very faint printing on those sheets, Tessa soon discovers that certain letters on each page, barely a handful of letters for each sheet, are printed in a slightly smaller, finer font. And after writing those letters down for each sheet, she starts to figure out that the letters form only one word when unscrambled, a different word for each sheet.
But is there a message within those words or are the words themselves the ultimate clue to figuring out who is behind the crimes and what their motives were? Or is all of this just another more chaotic crime taking place as each word begins to affect Tessa in ways she doesn’t even seem aware of at first, twisted, increasingly perverse ways that may have her seeking more than just Detective Miller’s assistance.
It wouldn’t be a month of madness without the Chaos of S.M.U.T. and this time the message behind their mayhem may just be discovered within the FINE Print.
Next… Is that… pie?
